Ever since he can remember, Duncan Currie has been fascinated by the landscape and the natural world and this is the dominant theme of his work. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1985. Since returning to Skye in 1992 he has made his living as an artist, and works from his studio and gallery at Sandbank Studio in Broadford.
Fishing boats feature regularly in Duncan’s work. Against the more muted colours of the landscape, the brightly painted working boats of the west coast provide a refreshing chance to work in more vivid hues. Light is a special element of the landscape of the NW Highlands and Islands; on Skye one is never more than four miles from the sea. Duncan believes this special light is from reflected or refracted light bouncing off the sea
Using mixed media and traditional watercolour techniques, he concentrates on the underlying structure of the landscape and the varied play of light on the hills and sea - ever changing through the passage of days and seasons.
